Skilled immigration news: Germany welcomes professionals from third countries | 2 million open job opportunities

Germany has recently given its final approval to the updated "Skilled Immigration Act," paving the way for professionals from third countries to easily come and work in the country. The move comes as Germany faces a severe shortage of workers, with a record-breaking 1.98 million open jobs reported by the country's Interior Ministry in 2022.

German Interior Minister Nancy Fizer emphasized the importance of bringing in skilled workers to ensure the thriving of the country's economy. "Anyone who works with small and medium-sized businesses and commerce knows that this is the only way we can ensure that our country thrives," she said.

The updated law introduces the concept of the "opportunity card," a points-based system that will hold equal weight to the residence permit. To qualify for the opportunity card, applicants will be evaluated based on several criteria. These include having a university or vocational degree, at least three years of professional experience in a recognized field, a good level of German proficiency, or previous experience living in Germany. Additionally, applicants must be at least 35 years old.

The opportunity card offers several advantages for skilled workers seeking employment in Germany. Notably, professional qualifications will no longer need to be recognized in Germany. Those who wish to have their qualifications recognized can do so upon arrival, eliminating the need for prior recognition. Furthermore, the opportunity card allows individuals to enter Germany and search for employment while in the country, rather than applying from abroad. During this job search phase, foreigners will be permitted to work up to 20 hours a week.

In addition to facilitating employment, the opportunity card also eases the process of relocating families to Germany and obtaining a residence permit.

The law is set to come into effect in three stages, with the first part scheduled for November 2023, followed by subsequent stages in March and June 2024. The introduction of the opportunity card is expected as early as March.

With the updated Skilled Immigration Act, Germany aims to address its labor shortage by attracting qualified professionals from around the world. By streamlining the immigration process and providing opportunities for skilled workers, the country aims to bolster its economy and meet the demands of its thriving industries.
